Spartaopoly Game
The Junior Woman's Club of Sparta is proud to announce their newest fundraiser, Spartaopoly. Spartaopoly is a clever adaptation of the classic board game that puts your business in the middle of the action where everyone can see it. The proceeds from Spartaopoly will benefit the proposed renovation of Kids' Kastle at Station Park. Businesses can choose to be a property owner, be a "Fate" card sponsor, be the start square or have a photo of their business on the cover of the game.
Currently, the games are in production and should be available at Sparta Day. You may also purchase Spartaopoly games at Sparta Books.
2008 5th Grade Spelling Bee
The 13th annual 5th grade Spelling Bee was held on Saturday, January, 26, 2008. The 5th grade teachers at Hilltop Country Day School, Reverend Brown Elementary School and Mohawk Avenue School were asked to help select, by means of mini-spelling bees, two students per class to participate in this year's Spelling Bee.
A total of 28 students, representing Reverend Brown and Mohawk Avenue School, participated. Congratulations to all the contestants! In 23 rounds of elimination, students from the Mohawk Avenue School took first, second and third place. These students showed how to persevere and stay cool under pressure.
PNC Bank - Sparta Branch graciously donated to the first place winner, the opening balance deposit for a child's college education savings plan (529 plan) at the PNC Bank. The first place winner also received a $35 gift certificate to and donated by Sparta Stationery Plus, the official dictionary of the 2007 JWC Spelling Bee - Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary - 11th Edition donated by the Sparta Book Store, and a Parker Pen. Second place prizes were a $100 savings bond and a Parker Pen donated by the Junior Woman's Club and a $20 gift certificate to and donated by the RJMars Store. The prizes for the 3rd place contestant were a $50 savings bond, a $10 gift certificate to Dunkin Donuts, and a Parker Pen - all donated by the Junior Woman's Club.
Thank you to the event's generous supporters for their donations: PNC Bank - Sparta Branch, Sparta Stationery Plus, RJ Mars Stores, Sparta Book Store and the Junior Woman's Club of Sparta. The Spelling Bee committee included Juniors Anne Jhong, Kathleen Piwko, and Karen Rendina.
A distinguished panel of judges included: Mr. Brad Davis, Vice Principal at the Sparta Middle School; Dr. Lorise Goeke, Principal at Helen Morgan Elementary School and Ms. Lyn Gebhard, Children's Coordinator at the Sparta Public Library. The Junior Woman's Club of Sparta was honored to have their help.
A special thanks to all the parents who encouraged their children to participate and to all the volunteers who made the event possible. Supporting an event like the Spelling Bee is a reflection of the community's dedication to academic achievement. Kathleen Piwko, Junior Woman's Club of Sparta President says, "Our annual spelling bee is one of my favorite events that we sponsor as a club. I think we are creating an event for our local children that they may remember for years to come."
For those students who are interested in improving their spelling skills, according to the Scripps National Spelling Bee study site (http://www.myspellit.com) created in cooperation with Merriam-Webster, studying language of origin will enable you to learn and remember several important rules, tips, and guidelines for successfully spelling words in English-the most challenging language of all for spellers!
First, second and third place winners of the Spelling Bee were invited to participate in the NJSFWC - JM District Level Spelling Bee on February 9, 2008 in Long Valley. District-level winners were invited to the State Championship which will take place on March 9, 2008 in New Brunswick.
2007 Festival of Trees Charity Benefit
The NJ Center for Outreach & Services for the Autism Community (COSAC) was selected as the club’s beneficiary for the 2007 Festival of Trees fundraiser. For over 40 years, COSAC has been dedicated to ensuring that all people with autism receive appropriate and effective services to maximize their growth potential, and to increase awareness of autism in the general public. The Center for Disease Control reports 1 in 152 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) on a national level. Within New Jersey, 1 in 94 children are diagnosed with ASDs (approximately 87,179 individuals).
