History and
Purpose The Junior Woman's Club of Sparta, New Jersey is part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The Women's Club was organized in 1910 through a U.S. Government charter and was federated in 1922. The state of New Jersey is divided into eleven districts of Women's Clubs. The Tenth District, located in the northwestern part of the state, consists of eleven Junior Woman's clubs, including Sparta. In 1966, a small group of women who were part of the Dover Juniors formed the Junior Woman's Club of Sparta. After several months of preparation, the Woman's Club of Sparta sponsored the Sparta Juniors and they officially became part of the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs. In the club's early years, many fundraisers and volunteer services focused on the special needs of handicapped and underprivileged children. The club's major interests in the late 1970's were environmental issues. Conservation and children's safety became leading issues in the 1980's. In the 1990's the club focused on community service. And now in the year 2000, club members are concentrating on fundraising to provide scholarships and gifts to those in need, and home life activities (anything including families/children.) Throughout the years, ideas and areas of need have changed, but not the spirit of service each member carries. For many years, Sparta Juniors have sponsored blood drives, Sparta Day, children's shows and children's fingerprinting and safety programs. The club continues to introduce new fundraisers and community service activities such as the Festival of Trees, and the Children's Education and Recreation Expo. The Junior Woman's Club of Sparta has definitely made its mark on Sparta. As the Junior Pledge states, Sparta Juniors are "living each day trying to accomplish something, not merely to exist." |
